Máire Mhac an tSaoi was born as Máire MacEntee in Dublin in 1922, the daughter of Sean MacEntee – a founding member of Fianna Fail and Tanaiste and Margaret Browne (or de Brun) also an Irish republican.
A lifelong devotee of Munster Irish, she is a prolific writer. Her works include: Margadh na Saoire (1956), Codladh an Ghaiscigh (1973), An Galar Dubhach (1980), An Cion go dtí Seo (1987)
Along with her husband, the politician, thinker and polemist, Conor Cruise O’Brien, she wrote A Concise History of Ireland (1972). Her autobiography, The Same Age as the State, was published in 2004. Her most recent collection is The Miraculous Parish: Selected Poems (2012).
