Hugh McFadden was born in Derry in 1942 where he lived brief before moving to County Donegal. He was educated at University College Dublin. He earned an MA degree in Modern History at UCD and was tutor there in the 1960s and early 1970s. Later he became a lecturer in journalism at the Dublin Institute of Technology.
For many years he was a subeditor at the Irish Press and regularly reviewed books for the press’ group of papers as well as Hibernia, Irish Independent, Irish Times and Sunday Tribune.
He was also a researcher for the Irish Manuscripts Commission and acted as Editorial Assistance on The Correspondence of Daniel O’Connell.
He has published four volumes of poetry: Cities of Mirrors (1984), Pieces of Time (2004), Elegies and Epiphanies (2005) and Empire of Shadows (2012).
The executor of the John Jordan literary estate he has edited both prose and poetry selections from the Irish writer: Selected Prose: Crystal Clear (2006) and The Selected Poems of John Jordan (2008).
He lives in Dublin.
